Continuing its successful multi-year year implementation, the MGA 2019 Volunteer Leadership Training Program (VoLT) is set to launch on 5 September 2019, with a class of 66 volunteers, 63 mentors, 15 sessions and 12+ speakers.

The Members & Geographic Activities (MGA) Board agreed to pilot the program in 2013, with 19 graduates, and later approved its implementation. Since then, the VoLT program continues to thrive, boasting over 250 graduates by end of 2018. VoLT graduates represent all IEEE Regions and over 100 Sections.

“From the start, the purpose of the VoLT program has been to empower volunteers to become more engaged, take positions of leadership within their units and later within the larger IEEE,” said Loretta J Arellano, a senior IEEE Volunteer from Region 6 and the program founder.

You can help recognize the efforts of outstanding volunteers by nominating individuals for one of the prestigious IEEE Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) Awards.  Each award has a unique mission and criteria and offers the opportunity to honor distinguished colleagues, inspiring teachers, and corporate leaders.

If you know someone who has made substantial regional IEEE volunteer contributions through innovative projects, exemplary leadership, service, or by fulfilling the goals as related to transnational activities, consider nominating them for one of the following awards:

MGA Larry K. Wilson Transnational Award

MGA Innovation Award

MGA Leadership Award

More than 984 million people have little or no access to electricity, especially in remote areas of the world. Without sufficient access to power, these communities continue a cycle of economic impoverishment.

IEEE Smart Village (ISV) seeks champions to lead fund-raising teams using crowdfunding. The campaign, called “Bring the Light,” allows small groups to establish reasonable fund-raising goals and then contribute on-line with one-time or monthly donations to IEEE Foundation.

The Digital & Creative Innovations team has created a flexible, free IEEE-branded website template suite for use by staff and volunteers. These templates support conferences, local IEEE Sections and Regions, Student Branches, programs, services, and initiative websites to create high quality, user-friendly web designs.

With data-based research prominent in today’s world, it is helpful to have a central location to store, manage, search, and access datasets. IEEE DataPort™, a valuable easily accessible data platform, is already serving as that central location for over 90,000 users across the globe and it can significantly enhance your research efforts. As an IEEE member, you can upload your datasets to help generate citations and bring your research to the forefront for other researchers and authors. IEEE DataPort provides a DOI for each dataset and enables you to store up datasets up to 2TB each, integrate your ORCID with your dataset, and meet open access requirements.

IEEE will soon be extending Concur, the new Volunteer Expense Reimbursement Platform, to IEEE Regions!  Concur is already in use by IEEE Major Boards, Committees, Societies and Technical Councils and the feedback has been very positive.

Concur is a cloud-based expense reporting and reimbursement platform, and is designed to create a fast and efficient electronic expense reimbursement experience for IEEE volunteers.  IEEE's implementation of Concur already delivers volunteers a broad range of benefits, including faster reimbursement and the ability to track real-time status of expense reports. This affects you if you submit expense reports to a Region.

Concur has been introduced in a multi-phased rollout that began in Q4 2018 and is anticipated to extend to Regions in late September.  More information is coming soon, so stay tuned!
