Available MGA Positions (Call for Nominations)

The IEEE Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) Nominations and Appointments (N&A) Committee seeks candidates to serve on the MGA Board and MGA Committees each year. Below is a list of available MGA positions. The nomination period for 2025 MGA Committee Chair Positions is March 15. 

You will be directed to an online portal. Follow the instructions provided within the portal to submit your nomination.


A general position description for an MGA standing committee chair is available below. Specific committee chair and member position descriptions will be posted as they become available.

The MGA Mission and Vision and desired common characteristics and common skills are also noted below.

Eligibility

To be eligible to be a Chair or a voting member of any MGA Committee, except the Student Activities Committee and the IEEE Women in Engineering Committee, the individual must be a member in good standing and shall be at IEEE Graduate Student Member, Member, Senior Member, or Fellow grade. MGA Board members (VP-MGA, Treasurer, Vice Chairs), the Chair and members of the IEEE Admission and Advancement Committee, the Chair of the IEEE Women in Engineering Committee, and the Chair of the MGA Awards and Recognition Committee shall be at IEEE Senior Member or Fellow grade.

MGA Committee Chair position description

Qualifications
    • Must be of Graduate Student Member, Member, Senior Member, or Fellow grade, unless chaired by the responsible Vice Chair, in which case must be of Senior member or Fellow grade
    • Previous experience as a member of the Committee is preferable
    • Project and time-management experience
    • Willingness to change and quick to adopt new work methods
    • Access to personal computer, Internet connection, and general-purpose office software
Responsibilities
    • Conduct the business of the Committee to achieve the purpose and functions of that Committee in accordance with its Charter
    • Establish subcommittees and ad hoc committees as needed in accordance with the Committee Charter
    • Call and chair meetings of the Committee in accordance with its Charter
    • Provide for the recording and distribution of minutes for the meetings in accordance with the Committee Charter
    • Recommend to the MGA Board (or other IEEE organizational unit) or the responsible MGA Vice Chair proposed changes to the Committee Charter to ensure that the Charter meets the current needs and objectives of the Committee
    • Carry out other tasks assigned to the Committee by the appropriate organizational unit, VP, or responsible MGA Vice Chair
    • Bring appropriate Committee items to the attention of the MGA Board or the responsible MGA Vice Chair
    • Report the status of Committee activity to MGA representative and other IEEE organizational unit
    • Prepare and present Committee budgets to the MGA Board or the responsible MGA Vice Chair as appropriate
    • Approve and forward to the MGA department all Committee expenditures
    • Maintain cognizance of Committee actual versus planned expenditure rates and associated work completed. Report through the Committee administrative chain budget status and recommendations for corrections.

Individuals nominated for MGA positions should have the following common characteristics and skills:
Common Characteristics 
    • Must possess a willingness to develop an understanding of the Strategic Vision of MGA and commit to its implementation and operating principles.
    • Should have demonstrated an increasing amount of management experience and excellent leadership qualities within their professional career.
    • Should have a desire for or experience in translating strategic vision into tactical action and providing direction and guidance to the design and implementation teams that carry out the mission.
    • Must be able to gain an understanding of the role of information technology in enabling MGA functions.
Common Skills
    • Demonstrated some tactical management experience.
    • Demonstrated leadership skills in a volunteer-led organization that operates by consensus. Negotiating skill is a definite plus.
    • Demonstrated interpersonal skills with sensitivity to cross-cultural and transnational issues.
    • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills and organizational ability.
    • Demonstrated some relationship and consensus building in a collaborative working environment.
    • Has an understanding of remote/electronic working environments and associated tools.
