Announcing the 2021 Volunteer Leadership Training Program

The MGA Training Committee is pleased to announce the launch of the 2021 Volunteer Leadership Training (VoLT) Program. The VoLT Program invites volunteers who have a desire to continue growing as IEEE volunteers and lead their local units to complete the program’s prerequisite courses and apply for the program.
To date, over 350 volunteers representing all ten IEEE Regions, and over 100 Sections, have graduated from the VoLT Program. As a testament to its success, graduates are taking positions of leadership with their local operational units and beyond.

Call for Proposals - Apply to the First-Ever IEEE Region 10 and IEEE HAC

We are pleased to share the announcement of a special Call for Proposals from IEEE Region 10 and the IEEE Humanitarian Activities Committee (HAC). “Addressing Local Needs During COVID Time” aims to engage IEEE members in Region 10 in meaningful humanitarian technology and sustainable development activities, foster the development of IEEE relationships with communities and stakeholders at the grassroots level, and incubate a geographically diverse selection of innovative prototypes that could potentially be scaled up in the future - all with safety as the highest priority.
Don’t wait to apply! The submission deadline is 20 June, but the application and review process will be expedited, so that work can start in July 2021. Visit the HAC website for more details and requirements.
Host a Data Competition on IEEE DataPort

In addition to giving users the opportunity to access and upload datasets, the IEEE DataPort platform also includes a Data Competitions Module that enables researchers to collect valuable feedback and analysis on their research data. To initiate a Data Competition, users create a time-limited data challenge by uploading a dataset up to 2TB to IEEE DataPort. Members of the global technical community, or a select set of participants, can then provide their specific analyses, or make predictions based on the dataset.
Other benefits and features of the IEEE DataPort Data Competitions Module include the following:
- Free to initiate or participate
- Time frame is fully customizable by the competition initiator and can range from a few days to one year
- Datasets can be downloaded for analysis or accessed directly in the Cloud
- Data Competition results are consolidated and easy to evaluate, and each analysis receives a unique DOI
- Registered users may submit comments and private messages to competition leads
Click here to view active IEEE DataPort Data Competitions and learn more about hosting your own competition today.
How Sections and Chapters Benefit from History
History activities such as Milestone dedications and anniversary celebrations raise the visibility of IEEE organizational units, help attract membership, and foster relations with industry and academia. George Thomas, the IEEE Chicago Section Historian, describes how the Chicago Section celebrated its centennial:
“In addition to organizing the Centennial Celebration, the Centennial Committee reached out to academia and industry for their contributions to Chicago electrical engineering history for a planned publication of the Chicago Section Centennial Book,” The results were substantial. Thirty sponsors provided history articles and congratulations. “Included in the publication were vintage articles from our newsletter SCANFAX―a publication originally from the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE) in Chicago. Also included were, a list of the last 100 section chairs, a short history of our founding, pictures from the World’s Columbian Exposition, and 1893 press clippings from The Electrical World and Western Electrician some of which reported on our organizational efforts. Finally, there were pictures from one of our most successful Chicago Section events―the Chicago Section Centennial Celebration.”
The Chicago Section’s experience shows how much IEEE organizational units can benefit from appointing a historian, or even a history committee. If your OU does not have a historian, and would be interested in appointing one, please contact IEEE History Center Research Coordinator Robert Colburn, r.colburn@ieee.org.

Become an IEEE Day 2021 Ambassador

IEEE Day: Celebrating the first time in history when engineers worldwide and IEEE members gathered to share their technical ideas in 1884.
IEEE Day’s theme is: “Leveraging Technology for a Better Tomorrow.” While the world benefits from what’s new, IEEE focuses on what’s next. IEEE Day 2021 will be celebrated on October 5, 2021, and will be the event's 12th edition.
The IEEE Day team is looking for IEEE members to serve as section ambassadors, communicating with the section committee, student branches, Affinity Groups (ex. WIE, YP...), and chapters to promote IEEE Day within the section.
The IEEE Day Ambassador will be responsible for contributing with the marketing campaign for IEEE Day and promoting IEEE by sharing its benefits. The Ambassador's responsibilities and eligibility can be found on social media platforms.
IEEE Day Ambassadors program provides an opportunity to collaborate with local and international teams of highly motivated volunteers.
