IEEE REACH and UNESCO World Engineering Day
Through the lens of history, IEEE REACH offers secondary teachers resources that enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills while boosting technological literacy. The program offers a new perspective on engineering and technology from which students may view it as relevant to their lives and future. Under the IEEE/UNESCO MOU, in association with the IEEE Africa Council and Uganda Section, a pilot program introduced students, predominantly girls, to REACH resources in an education setting and by a traveling classroom to rural villages. Collaboration expanded to introduce REACH to Secondary Education Science and Math Teachers during teacher workshops led by the Uganda National Commission for UNESCO. The initiative is enhancing teacher engagement in STEM, while simultaneously increasing access to STEM education to underserved communities. UNESCO is exploring exporting the program to other countries throughout Africa and around the world.
A highlight of the initiative will be part of a round table conversation during UNESCO World Engineering Day 2022, Build Back Wiser - Engineering the Future. Register here to tune in on 4 March to see Vincent Kaabunga, Past Chair IEEE Africa Council, and volunteer lead IEEE/UNESCO MOU, present Hands-on Learning for STEM Education - Getting Our New Engineers Onboard.
